> I will say it’s horrible for making browser games from a performance standpoint. No one program is right for ever person, so just consider the pros and cons of each program so you can decide for yourself which one is best for you. Stencyl is arguably the easiest to use, but at the cost of flexibility and speed, while on the other side of the spectrum Haxe and Unity are the hardest to use, but grant massive freedoms in your development. To summarize, I don’t think any one program is best per se or else one would prosper and the others would die out. I don’t know about exporting to a web based format, but the website says it exports to HTML 5, which should be able to run in your browser without any plugin installation at all.

I haven’t used it myself, but I imagine it would be harder than Flash Dev but easier than Unity. It, like Unity, can export to a lot of different platforms such as phones, tablets, ect.

It’s a free to use programming language which is basically supposed to be a stricter version of AS3. Lastly, on the topic of multiplatform development, another alternative I haven’t seen anyone mention would be Haxe. I also _think_ it uses C# which if used correctly is faster than actionscript could ever hope to be, though as stated earlier, it may sacrifice that on it’s journey to different methods of gameplay. That said it is otherwise one of the best programs for getting your games to multiple platforms and is supposed to be really easy to use compared to other 3D environments.

Flash Dev performance wise is the better than Flash CC or Stencyl. (Thankfully nothing supports AS2 anymore, so you don’t have to worry about making that painful switch). Starting with Flash CC then switching to Flash Dev will be a much easier jump, and might ease you in better than starting straight off with Flash Dev, but like I said people tend to stick with what they start with. If you try to switch to flash, I think you’ll find having to manually code everything a huge pain (even though Flash CC is more or less inherently better performance wise). There is little to no coding in developing for it. In my experience, whatever you start off with you will stick with and it will be very difficult to switch. I wouldn’t really take Thepenguinking2’s word on that seeing as he has only ever developed in Stencyl. Like pugzy said, it depends on what you want to make. One of those being ignoring collisions with objects of a certain tag, making you have to create new layers a lot, which gets a little annoying. If you some money to spare, and you just wanna make a 2D game for web, mobile or desktop, I don’t see why not to go with Flash.Īlso, if you are making a 2D game, Unity still has some downsides to using its 2D system, lacking certain functions that its 3D has had since day 1. To me, that seems like it’d be a pain in the butt. Although you can download programs to let you code in As3 and export SWF’s, you won’t be able to do _anything_ visually, except for the graphics you create in Photoshop, or whatever it is you’re gonna use for that. Of course, Unity has a free version while Flash does not. That seemed to work out pretty good for me. So Flash could be your animation program and Unity does the programming. Having to make sprite sheets is a bit of a pain, so if you have Flash + Unity, Flash allows you to export Flash animations into sprite sheets. In my opinion, Unity was the best dev process in a lot of ways, but lacked Flash’s ease on things such as animations.

If you want to make something 3D or 2D, Unity will pretty much export to everything under the sun, but it will require a Pro license to do anything other than web, desktop & mobile/OUYA. (of course, with Flash CC’s newly added feature of custom platform support, and the ability to import other’s platform SDK’s will open up a door to loads more platforms now) If you want to make a 2D web, desktop, mobile or OUYA game/app then use Flash. To me, Stencyl is the worst way to go… For anything.
